Update - 2/4/08
Matthew Takes Unassisted Steps with Right Leg!!!!
We are so thrilled!!! Previously Matthew had to have a large rubberband attached to the end of his right shoe and that was connected to a bar on the walker. When the walker was moved forward, it helped to pull Matthew's right foot forward since he was unable to move it himself. That's not the case now. Earlier last week Matthew took eight steps with BOTH feet unassisted. No rubber band on his right foot! He picked his right foot up and moved it forward by himself. It was a lot of work but he did it! Toward the end of the week, he progress and went much farther than eight steps - unassisted again. He is still using the walker and has helpers around him, but this is a major accomplishment for his right leg and foot.
As I mentioned in the previous blog, Matthew is more self-aware. Since that message, he continues to progress and says more variety of his wants and needs. Also, in speech therapy one of the exercises he has to do is finish a sentence with a word or two. Often Matthew would get stuck on one or two responses and repeat them, even if they weren't appropriate for the sentence. Now Matthew has improved and is using new appropriate words to finish the sentences.
That's all the news for now. Just had to share with all of you about Matthew's progress with his right leg.
